Jackson's Amador Computer Users Group Wins Three Awards

The International Association of PC User Groups (APCUG) held its annual meeting during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 3rd, 2005. Hundreds of user groups were represented from many countries, including the US, Canada and Australia. Jackson's local computer user group won three awards at the event.

The Amador Computer Users Group (ACUG), a non-profit group which holds its monthly meetings at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month at the Jackson Senior Center, is a long time member of the International Association. This is not the first time ACUG, with business sponsor Webcentric Computer Services, has won awards and been recognized Internationally.

The APCUG holds three contests annually: the Jerry Awards (given for exemplary community service by a user group), a newsletter contest (for outstanding user group news letters), and a Web site contest honoring the best of the user group Web sites. Many user groups enter these contests every year, but notably, the Amador Computer Users Group was one of only two computer user groups that won awards in all three contests held this year.

Karen Crabtree accepted an award as editor of the Bytes & Bits Newsletter, published monthly for members. Barbara Kreiss of Webcentric Computer Services, accepted an award for the second time as developer and Web master of ACUG's Web site. The group's winning site can be found at http://www.goldrush.com/~acug .

The ACUG Senior Center Broadband Project Committee, composed of project leader Ted Langlet, and members Gene Sproul, Karen Crabtree and Barbara Kreiss, also accepted a joint award from the APCUG's Jerry Awards committee for their outstanding community service project. The committee helped the Jackson Senior Center choose a method of bringing broadband computer access to the center. ACUG and Webcentric jointly have won a total of four Jerry Awards for community service since 1998. This year's award of $500 will be used in ACUG's Scholarship Fund for deserving local high school graduates.

Webcentric Computer Services, located in Pine Grove (www.web-centric.net), is a long time sponsor of the local user group and has participated in all of the award winning community service projects ACUG has completed to date.

"We have enjoyed working with ACUG members over the years on many community service projects. Webcentric has provided technical assistance, equipment and time, the volunteers that make up the user group have volunteered many hours, and are a great group to work with" said business owner Barbara Kreiss. "We recommend their meetings as a good place to meet nice people who will go out of their way to help you with computer issues".

The group's meetings are open to the public and free of charge. Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are held through out the month on various topics such as Windows, the Internet, Digital Photography, and more. Membership includes vendor discounts on software, books and other services. Contact president Karen Crabtree at 296-5252 or email acuginfo@goldrush.com  for more information.
